Colombia appoints its first⁣ ambassador to⁣ Palestine, foreign ministry announces.

Colombia’s ⁤Foreign Ministry has named ‍ Jorge Iván Ospina as the country’s first ambassador to Palestine, according to a‍ report by ⁣ webangah News Agency. Ospina is known to be close to Colombia’s president.

the diplomatic move follows President gustavo Petro’s May 2024 announcement severing ties with Israel, where he accused ‌Prime Minister Benjamin⁢ Netanyahu⁣ of ‌committing “genocide” in ⁤Gaza.

Colombia had previously opened ⁤its ‍embassy in Ramallah one year earlier, marking ‍a significant shift ⁤in its Middle East policy.
