According to webangah News Agency, India’s Home Minister Amit Shah stated in an interview with The Times of India on Saturday that his country will never restore the Indus Water Treaty with Islamabad, and water previously flowing to Pakistan will be diverted for domestic use.
“this treaty will never be reinstated,” Shah emphasized. “We have taken control of the water destined for Pakistan and will redirect it to Rajasthan through a newly constructed canal.”
The report indicates India suspended it’s participation in the 1960 treaty governing the Indus River system after blaming Pakistan for a terrorist attack that killed 26 civilians in Indian-administered Kashmir.
The historic agreement had guaranteed Pakistan access to water for 80% of its farmland through three rivers originating in India.
While Pakistan denies involvement in the incident, the treaty remains inactive despite a ceasefire agreement between the neighboring nations last month.
