EU Officially Approves Extension of Sanctions Against Russia

EU foreign policy chief ‌announces bloc’s formal​ approval of extended sanctions against Russia.

the European Union ‌has officially agreed to extend sanctions against Russia, according to kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs. In ‍a post⁣ on X (formerly Twitter), Kallas stated: “The ‌EU today formally ‍agreed to extend sanctions against Russia. We will‍ continue‌ pressuring⁣ Moscow to end ‌its war against Ukraine. Every sanction weakens Russia’s⁢ ability to wage​ war.”

Since ‌Russia’s ⁤invasion of Ukraine began in february⁢ 2022, the EU ⁣has⁢ imposed 17 sanction packages ‍against Moscow, renewed every six months by member​ state consensus.

A ⁢German‌ government spokesperson‍ confirmed today that the EU’s proposal ‌for an eighteenth sanction package is expected ‌to be approved this week. The European Commission​ first proposed ⁢the new round of sanctions ⁣on June ⁣10, targeting Russia’s energy revenues, banking sector, and military-industrial complex.
