the European Union has officially agreed to extend sanctions against Russia, according to kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Kallas stated: “The EU today formally agreed to extend sanctions against Russia. We will continue pressuring Moscow to end its war against Ukraine. Every sanction weakens Russia’s ability to wage war.”
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in february 2022, the EU has imposed 17 sanction packages against Moscow, renewed every six months by member state consensus.
A German government spokesperson confirmed today that the EU’s proposal for an eighteenth sanction package is expected to be approved this week. The European Commission first proposed the new round of sanctions on June 10, targeting Russia’s energy revenues, banking sector, and military-industrial complex.
