According to the English section of webangah News agency, citing Mehr News Agency, the president of Iran’s Red Crescent Society sent a message to his counterparts globally, highlighting alarming levels of severe malnutrition among Gaza’s children and urging immediate action to contain this dire humanitarian crisis.
The message from Pirhossein Kolivand reads:
“On behalf of the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) and the National Committee for Humanitarian Law (INCHL), I wish to draw your urgent attention to the grave humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza. Recent reports and statements from UNICEF, the World Health Institution (WHO), United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) all confirm that conditions on the ground are critical and require swift, coordinated humanitarian intervention.
The people of Gaza face unimaginable suffering: widespread malnutrition, hunger, and extreme shortages in access to food and clean water have pushed countless children and civilians into life-threatening conditions. The destruction of hospitals and health infrastructure has severely disrupted essential medical services, worsening an already catastrophic situation. Over 50,000 children have been killed or injured while thousands more suffer from severe malnutrition.”
Since October 2023, WHO has recorded more than 725 attacks on healthcare facilities. Hospitals like Kamal Adwan Hospital, Indonesia Hospital, Hamad Rehabilitation & Prosthetics Hospital, alongside Gaza European Hospital have ceased medical services due to thier proximity to conflict zones-further deteriorating humanitarian conditions. Women’s health is especially endangered-especially for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. UNICEF reports that by April 2025 eighty children have died from malnutrition-a 54 percent increase within less than three months-with thousands under five years old at risk of severe undernourishment.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society alongside INCHL calls on all national Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies worldwide to reaffirm their vital mission by taking immediate action supporting affected populations.
Pursuant to Common Article 2 of the 1949 Geneva Conventions, member states bear responsibility for respecting international humanitarian law obligations protecting civilian dignity during armed conflicts. We urge national societies everywhere urgently issue public statements; actively engage with their governments; pressure diplomatically for:
– An immediate cessation of all hostilities impacting civilians or humanitarian operations within Gaza,
– Unhindered facilitation allowing delivery of aid supplies and medical services,
– Accountability measures ending impunity for violations against international humanitarian law.”
This ongoing crisis underscores our collective commitment toward humanity. Together we must strive peaceably-to safeguard lives while alleviating immense suffering through principled humanitarism coupled with constructive dialog among governments-thus preserving core movement values.
We reaffirm our solidarity with all vulnerable communities affected by this conflict and also our colleagues throughout the global Movement amid these challenging times.”
