According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada has decided to recognize Palestine as an independent country during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session scheduled for September.
This move places Canada alongside France, the United Kingdom, spain, and Malta, all of which have committed to recognizing palestine.
Several countries, many from Europe, expressed their readiness to recognize Palestine at the conclusion of a conference on Palestine co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia in New York. This recognition is planned for the forthcoming UN General Assembly session in September.
The foreign ministers of these countries issued a joint statement urging other nations that have not yet recognized Palestine to join this movement.
Among these nations are eight states-Australia, Finland, New Zealand, Portugal, Andorra, Malta, San Marino, and Luxembourg-that declared their intention to recognize Palestine for the first time alongside Canada. Simultaneously occurring, countries like Iceland, Ireland, and Spain reaffirmed their commitment to this path after having previously recognized Palestine.
Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela separately confirmed that his country will officially announce its recognition of Palestine.
Previously, both France and the United Kingdom had also expressed their willingness to recognize Palestinian statehood.
