Ukrainian Parliament Votes to Grant Independence to Anti-Corruption Agencies

The Ukrainian parliament‌ approved the‌ restoration⁢ of the independence of anti-corruption ⁢agencies in the ⁣country with 331 votes in favor and none against.

According to the English ‍section of ⁢ webangah⁣ News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and ⁣Reuters, the Ukrainian Parliament voted on Thursday to restore the independence of two key anti-corruption bodies. This marks a notable step toward resolving ⁣Kyiv’s largest political crisis⁣ as ongoing conflicts ⁣began.

The parliament⁢ announced‍ that lawmakers passed the bill with 331 votes for and zero against. The legislation⁤ had been introduced last⁢ week by President‌ Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The move follows pressure from thousands of protesters and senior‍ European officials demanding stronger action against corruption⁣ amid Western financial and military aid to ⁤Ukraine. In ⁢response, President⁣ Zelenskyy ⁢proposed this bill⁤ to⁤ parliament.

Earlier reports by The New York Times indicated that the European Union‌ suspended $1.7 billion in aid allocated to Kyiv due to Ukraine’s failure to implement key anti-corruption reforms.

This funding suspension ⁢is ‍part of a broader €50 billion support⁤ package intended by the EU to promote ⁢macroeconomic stability,⁣ recovery, and ‌reform efforts⁢ in Ukraine.
