According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing the Iraqi news agency WA’a, Falih al-Fayyadh, head of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), emphasized on Sunday that passing the PMF law is not just a legal act but an expression of the people’s appreciation for their combatants.
In a statement addressed to Iraqi parliament members, he said: “At a moment when concepts like loyalty and history come alive, we stand before a national duty-one related to honoring those who took up arms and defended Iraq and its sovereignty.”
Al-Fayyadh added: “The approval of the PMF law is more than legislation; it symbolizes the nation’s respect for its fighters and affirms the rights of those who answered the religious authority’s call and shaped this homeland’s glory with their blood.”
It is indeed noteworthy that Iraq’s parliamentary Security and Defense Committee announced yesterday it had formally requested placing the PMF law on Parliament’s agenda. Kareem Alawi Al-Humaidawi, chairman of this committee, stated that following completion of its first and second readings in Parliament, the law was ready for final approval. Though, due to insufficient attendance by lawmakers yesterday, reviewing this legislation was postponed to another session.
The United States has clearly opposed the PMF law and has exerted heavy pressure on both government officials and parliamentarians as last month to block its passage.
