According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Reuters, russia’s Emergency Ministry issued tsunami alerts for three districts in the Kamchatka region after a magnitude 7 earthquake struck near the Kuril Islands.
The ministry stated on its Telegram channel that while wave heights where estimated to be short, residents are still advised to stay away from coastal areas.
However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which registered the magnitude 7 quake, did not issue any tsunami warnings. The US Geological Survey also confirmed the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.0.
Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that overnight activity at Klyuchevskoy volcano on Kamchatka Peninsula was detected-the first eruption there in 600 years.
Last Wednesday morning, a branch of Russia’s Academy of Sciences Research Center announced an 8.5-magnitude earthquake shook the coasts of Kamchatka Peninsula. The center emphasized that such an event is classified as rare and remarkable.
The Kuril Islands archipelago remains a disputed territory between Moscow and Tokyo. The entire island chain was transferred to the former Soviet Union in 1945. Tokyo claims ownership over Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan islands and several uninhabited islets within this group.
