According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Russia Today, the American newspaper Hill reported that the U.S. Senate will not approve a new sanctions bill against Russia before the end of summer. The proposed legislation includes increased pressure and restrictions targeting third countries cooperating with Russia.
the report states that Republican senators are prepared to leave Washington without passing this extensive sanctions package.Senate working sessions conclude in early August, after which lawmakers return to their home states for recess and will return to Washington in September.
The report adds that even though hardliners in the Senate want to pass the sanctions before recess, final decisions on implementing these measures at least until late summer have been deferred to President Donald Trump.
Hill wrote that this approach grants Trump “the necessary freedom to decide on executing his threats” regarding sanctions on Russia and its trade partners, while Democrats remain skeptical about Trump’s commitment to fully enforcing these sanctions.
On July 8, Trump stated he was ”actively considering” approving this bill through Congress. However, on July 14 he announced that if an agreement with Russia was not reached within 50 days, the U.S. would impose 100% tariffs on imports from Russia and its allies.
Later, on July 29, Trump shortened this deadline from 50 days to just 10 days.
Trump also commented that imposing a 500% tariff on imports from countries trading with Russia-as outlined in the bill-would not be effective.
A bipartisan group of senators introduced this bill; key authors included Lindsey Graham (Republican from South Carolina) and Richard Blumenthal (Democrat from Connecticut).
The proposal calls for secondary sanctions targeting buyers of Russian oil, gas, uranium, and other goods alongside a planned 500% tariff on imports coming into America from those countries.
Rand Paul, Republican senator from Kentucky, previously warned in an article that if passed, America itself would suffer as one of the biggest economic and strategic losers consequently of these measures.
