According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr news Agency and Reuters, South Korean officials have begun dismantling propaganda loudspeakers positioned along the border with north Korea. This move aligns with policies introduced by President Yoon Suk-yeol aimed at reducing tensions with Pyongyang.
The new governance turned off these loudspeakers shortly after taking office. Previously used to broadcast critical messages toward North Korea, this decision supports efforts to revive stalled negotiations between Seoul and Pyongyang.
Though,North Korea recently rejected Seoul’s offer for talks, signaling little interest in dialog at this time.
The South Korean ministry of Defense stated today that removing the loudspeakers is “a practical step intended solely to help ease tensions between South and north Korea.”
Photos released by the Ministry show soldiers disconnecting power cables from speakers stacked like a wall along the border.
Despite an armistice signed after the 1950-1953 Korean War, both Koreas remain technically at war. Relations have deteriorated markedly in recent years.
Former President Moon Jae-in removed these speakers in 2018 as part of his administration’s agreement to halt unfriendly actions that risked military conflict.
In contrast, last year former conservative president Yoon Suk-yeol ordered their reinstallation following incidents where balloons carrying waste were sent from North Korea into South Korean airspace.
Since Seoul switched off the loudspeakers again in June, it appears Pyongyang has also ceased its reciprocal activities-an issue that had long disturbed residents near the border on both sides.
