According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency via Shahab News Agency, Ahmad Naeem, director of Sheikh Hamad Specialized Rehabilitation and Prosthetics Hospital in the Gaza Strip, described an unprecedented humanitarian disaster amid the ongoing conflict with Israel. He reported that amputation rates in Gaza have surged by more than 225 percent since the war began.
Dr. Naeem stated that the hospital admits about 200 patients and injured individuals daily to its rehabilitation, prosthetics, hearing, and balance treatment departments.
He emphasized that since Israel’s attacks started in October 2023, over 6,500 new amputations have been recorded-compared to roughly 2,000 cases during similar periods before the war.
Naeem highlighted the hospital’s limited capacity: it can manufacture only about 150 prosthetic limbs annually. At this rate, meeting current demands would take over 20 years.
The Sheikh hamad Hospital director also noted ongoing efforts to increase production capacity to between 400 and 500 limbs per year. However, Israel’s imposed blockade has prevented vital raw materials from reaching the facility.
He pointed out a severe shortage of specialized personnel as well. “Our medical team is working at double capacity,” he said. “But addressing this crisis urgently requires expanding skills and receiving technical and human support.”
