The European Union has indirectly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal too halt the war between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing the necessity of restoring all territories temporarily occupied by Russian forces to Kyiv, according to webangah News Agency.
Kyiv is entitled to all its temporarily occupied lands, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell affirmed in a statement on Sunday.
He also expressed confidence that the United States has the ability to compel Russia into serious negotiations.
Borrell added that any agreement reached between Moscow and Washington must involve Ukrainian and EU participation. Moreover,such a deal should not enable further Russian advances against Kyiv.
The EU official announced that an extraordinary meeting of EU foreign ministers concerning Ukraine will take place on Monday.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed halting hostilities during his meeting with Steve Wittkoff, U.S. special envoy for regional affairs appointed by Trump, in exchange for securing additional territory in eastern Ukraine.
The Wall Street Journal cited European and Ukrainian officials saying Putin told Wittkoff that if Kyiv withdrew its forces from Donetsk-resulting in Moscow gaining full control over Donetsk, Luhansk, and Crimea-he would agree to a complete ceasefire.
