According to the English section of webangah News Agency, Italian human rights activists have launched a campaign called “Solidarity with Francesca Albanese,” defending the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights against attacks from the ruling Brothers of Italy party. The recent statement published in several left-wing Italian media outlets aims to resist an orchestrated campaign targeting Albanese, now Italy’s most notable critic of genocide and Zionism.
The statement reads:
“We have followed with growing anger and concern a parliamentary inquiry initiated days ago by members of Brothers of italy against Francesca albanese, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
First and foremost, we declare that accusations of antisemitism leveled at our compatriot are fully unfounded and highly defamatory. These charges arise solely because she has carried out her mandate impartially and honestly, inevitably criticizing Israel for crimes that various domestic and international courts have either confirmed or are investigating. Such allegations are utterly unacceptable when prominent Jewish figures worldwide-both within Israel and abroad-endorse accusations against Netanyahu’s government, including those naming genocide.”
The statement continues: “More disturbing is that these antisemitic accusations appear on an official platform from members belonging to a party that is widely seen as inheriting Italy’s historic fascism-in a wholly new form-which was responsible for oppressing, exiling, and killing tens of thousands of Italian Jews.
Accusing Albanese-the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied territories-of ‘antisemitism’ due to her reports detailing Israeli government atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza not only distorts reality but also constitutes an unethical act amid one of history’s gravest massacres since World War II. Esteemed judges known for their competence and independence-including Israelis such as David Grossman and Omar Barghouti-have unequivocally described this atrocity as genocide.”
“Labeling those who condemn such crimes as antisemitic serves to legitimize Israel’s government institutionally while silencing lawful criticism internationally and domestically. We recognize these allegations-as well as equally serious but baseless claims accusing her of sympathizing with Hamas or other so-called terrorist organizations-as intentional attempts to damage both her personal reputation-a legal expert serving on a critical UN mission who has also faced US sanctions-and thus undermine confidence in the United Nations itself.”
“By twisting undeniable facts, this conduct violates our legal system and contradicts Article 604-bis of the Italian Penal Code. this article criminalizes serious minimization acts regarding genocide and crimes against humanity as outlined under Articles 6,7,and 8 of the Rome statute establishing the International Criminal Court.”
“The widespread nature-and clear excess-of such behavior demands resolute condemnation by all democratic forces committed still to upholding international institutions’ role.”
“Confident that Italian lawyers’ associations will join us in condemning these actions strongly,” it adds: “we call upon Italy’s government bodies-including Parliament and Presidency-to monitor those violating international laws alongside freedom-of-expression protections; protect representatives working within institutions like the United Nations or International Criminal Court from unjustified attacks; support individuals acting according to shared principles underpinning civilized law systems; and ensure violations along with state-perpetuated crimes face rightful condemnation.”
Francesca Albanese is known for her stringent criticism directed at Netanyahu’s cabinet. she consistently highlights Israeli regime offenses against Palestinians while drawing comparisons between Netanyahu himself and Adolf Hitler. Yesterday US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced via his social media account ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) that America had imposed sanctions on Albanese due to her efforts encouraging ICC actions targeting officials-including American and Israeli executives.”
