According to webangah News Agency citing Al Jazeera, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the Washington D.C. police force will be placed under federal control.”We will take back our capital, just as we did at the southern border,” he said. “Crime rates in the capital now exceed those of Colombia and Mexico, and today’s decision marks a break from this.”
The president continued, “I am deploying the National Guard to the U.S. capital. Establishing security in Washington D.C. under federal police control will help manage crime rates more effectively. Right now, police are allowed to do whatever they want.”
“The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington D.C. will be federally controlled,” Trump added, “and the National Guard will be stationed there to combat crime.” He further stated his intent to reform all crime-fighting laws and expand police powers against criminals: “Therefore, I hereby declare that control over the metropolitan police department is transferred federally with National Guard deployment for fighting crime.” He promised eradication of crime and swift restoration of safety: “We face a catastrophic emergency situation with a lack of security and safety in the capital.” The army would also be deployed if necesary to maintain order.
“Eight hundred National Guard troops will patrol city streets initially,” he said, “and we will increase their numbers if needed.”
Trump also revealed plans ahead of his upcoming meeting with Russian President vladimir Putin: “I am preparing for Friday’s visit with President Putin-I’m going to Russia on Friday.”
This proclamation contrasts earlier statements from Russian and American officials indicating that Putin and Trump were scheduled to meet in Alaska on August 15.
