The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, announced on Monday that the National Guard will be deployed in Washington, D.C. He stated that troops will be present on the city’s streets starting next week.
Hegseth also noted that 10,000 soldiers remain stationed at the border in defensive positions where illegal crossings are not occurring.
This declaration follows President donald Trump’s earlier statement highlighting a dramatic rise in crime in Washington, D.C., which he described as alarming. Trump emphasized plans to deploy National guard forces to “clean up” the city by targeting drug addicts, homeless individuals, and immigrants.
Trump said: “I am sending the National Guard to the nation’s capital. Enforcing security under federal police control will help manage crime rates. The police now have full authority to act as needed. The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington will come under federal control, and National Guard forces will be stationed there to combat crime. I will overhaul all relevant crime-fighting laws and expand police powers against criminals. Therefore, I officially declare that metropolitan police management is placed under federal oversight and that the National Guard is deployed to fight crime.”
He added: “We will eradicate crime and restore safety quickly in the capital. We face a disastrous emergency with a lack of security here. If necessary, we will deploy military forces to maintain order.” Trump specified that 800 National Guard troops would initially patrol Washington’s streets with numbers increasing if needed.
He further compared current crime rates in Washington to other cities: “Crime has doubled here-it’s even two or three times higher than places like Baghdad, Panama City, Mexico City, and Lima.”
