According to the english section of webangah News Agency, citing Al-Hadath via Mehr News Agency, Yedioth Ahronoth published an exclusive report on its Hebrew website detailing efforts by an Israeli lobby group active in the United States to install Samir Halileh, a Palestinian businessman, as Gaza’s governor.
Halileh is an economist and well-known political and commercial figure within the Palestinian Authority. He resides in Ramallah and has held senior positions within the PA.His past roles include Secretary-General of the Palestinian government, Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade, Chairman of the Board at the Palestinian Economic Policy Research Institute, board member of the Palestine Trade Center, CEO of Padico Holding-the largest holding company in the PA-and Chairman of the Palestine Securities Exchange.
Halileh maintains close ties with Bashar Al-Masri, a Palestinian-American billionaire known for his strong connections to former US President Donald Trump’s management.
The report states that documents submitted to the US Department of Justice reveal one lobbying group led by Ben Menashe in America has been working on behalf of halileh for several months. The explicit goal is to influence American policymakers to promote Halileh as Gaza’s governor. Ben Menashe is a Zionist with experience in Israel’s intelligence service.
This initiative began last year toward the end of Joe Biden’s presidency and accelerated after Donald Trump returned to power.
Menashe confirmed details about installing Halileh as ruler over Gaza, emphasizing that this effort goes beyond business interests: “this issue benefits good Jews.”
The documents provided by Menashe outline plans involving deployment of American and Arab forces into Gaza; recognition by the United Nations of Gaza’s special status; leasing land from Egypt for building an airport and seaport in Sinai; granting Israel gas exploration rights off Gaza’s coast; among other provisions.
Meanwhile, Halileh claims that achieving governance over Gaza requires both parties’ commitment to permanent ceasefire agreements and ending hostilities. Without referencing widespread popular support among Gazans for armed resistance against Israel under dire conditions or mentioning alleged Israeli atrocities against civilians there, he asserted that “Gaza cannot be filled with weapons left from Hamas or Islamic Jihad as people need to feel safe inside their homes.”
