According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and The Guardian, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that Chinese President Xi Jinping told him Beijing woudl not attack Taiwan during his presidency.
Speaking to Fox News ahead of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine war, Trump said, “I have to say we have a similar issue with the president of China and Taiwan, but I don’t believe any conflict will occur provided that I’m here. We’ll see.”
he added, “Xi Jinping told me, ‘As long as you are president, I won’t do that,’ and I appreciated that. However, he also said both he and China are very patient.”
The Chinese Embassy in Washington has not yet responded to this claim. trump and Xi held their first phone call during Trump’s second presidential term in June. earlier in April, Trump mentioned that the Chinese president had called him but did not disclose when.
China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and has pledged to reunify the self-governing island with the mainland. It has not ruled out using military force to achieve this goal.
Even though Washington serves as Taipei’s primary arms supplier, like most countries worldwide, the United States does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
