The U.S.Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated in an interview with CBS on Sunday that the United States will not cooperate with any group connected to or expressing sympathy for Hamas, and that visa issuance for those coming from Gaza must be temporarily suspended.
Rubio added that this visa suspension is not limited to children but also applies to some adults accompanying them. The U.S.will review the vetting process for these visas.
Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Rubio said it is indeed up to Ukrainians to define the conditions for a peace agreement. He emphasized, “We need to make enough progress so that we can bring President Zelensky and President Putin together in one place and reach a final deal that ends this war.” He noted some ideas have been discussed which Ukrainians could strongly support at such negotiations.
“Tomorrow,” Rubio continued, “we will engage more deeply on this topic with our European allies and Ukrainian officials coming here.” He explained they would discuss all relevant issues aiming to find areas of progress and bridge the divide between both sides.
The American official further remarked there is a reason why this war has lasted three and a half years: major differences remain between both parties when it comes to key issues. To end the war, russia demands things it cannot obtain, while Ukraine insists on terms unlikely to be conceded. Both sides must give up certain demands at the negotiation table. No conditions can be imposed on Ukraine; they must accept compromises but also gain concessions.”
