According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Axios, two informed sources reported that the White House asked Ukrainian officials about Volodymyr Zelensky’s attire for his meeting today with US President Donald Trump.
Zelensky’s choice of clothing sparked a diplomatic controversy ahead of their previous encounter at the White House Oval Office in March. At that time, Trump was displeased with Zelensky’s military-style outfit and sarcastically remarked upon his arrival, saying, “He really dressed up today!”
Some American officials believed Zelensky’s dress and demeanor contributed to the poor outcome of that previous meeting.
Insiders now say Zelensky will appear at the White House wearing the same black jacket he wore during June’s NATO summit in the Netherlands. One source described his attire as “suit-like but not a traditional suit.”
The NATO summit marked Zelensky’s first formal engagement since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 where he arrived dressed more formally.
An American official commented, “Zelensky showed up like a normal person-not erratic-and wore clothing appropriate for someone attending NATO.”
One Trump advisor half-jokingly told Axios, “If Zelensky shows up in a suit on Monday, it will be a good sign for peace-though we don’t expect it.”
Another Trump adviser added, “It would be great if he even wore a tie-though again, we’re not holding our breath.”
