The opposition National Party in Uruguay has called on Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin to provide an explanation in parliament regarding the suspension of a cooperation agreement between the National Agency for Research adn Innovation and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, citing the war in Gaza, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, referencing Mehr News Agency.
Senator Sergio Botana from the National Party stated that Senator Javier García, head of his party’s parliamentary group, will demand Lubetkin’s summons over this “foolish” decision.
Botana pointed out Israel’s collaboration with Uruguay during the COVID-19 pandemic and questioned how scientific activities could be halted due to an ideological issue imposed by the government. He emphasized that relations between countries should not depend on ties between governments or ruling parties like Frente Amplio. he asked, “how can we stop scientific growth and progress because of an ideological matter?”
On Friday, Uruguay suspended its cooperation agreement with Israel related to advanced technologies, citing violations of international law and humanitarian rights in Gaza.
