According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and France 24, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignacio Cassis referred to the possibility of Geneva hosting a bilateral meeting between Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky, presidents of Russia and Ukraine respectively. He said that in such an event, Switzerland would grant diplomatic immunity to Putin.
French President Emmanuel Macron rejected the idea of Paris hosting similar talks as in 2019 during an interview with TF1 today. He stated that “the situation is now at a different stage and a neutral country should be chosen-most likely Switzerland; I prefer Geneva. Another country could also be host.” The last bilateral meetings took place in Istanbul, Turkey.
On March 16 last year, the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin on charges of war crimes related to the unlawful deportation of hundreds of Ukrainian children from Ukraine to Russia. The Kremlin has strongly denied these allegations, calling them politically motivated.
This ruling obliges all 124 ICC member states-including Switzerland-to arrest Putin if he enters their territory and transfer him for trial in The hague.
