According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency adn Al-Akhbar, Lebanese authorities handed over an Israeli prisoner this morning through the Ras Al-Naqoura crossing. This Israeli captive had been held in Lebanon for one year.
the declaration did not come from Beirut but from Tel Aviv and Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office, which emphasized that this action followed secret negotiations conducted over recent months.
Interestingly, Lebanese officials were reportedly unaware of the captive’s presence in their country. It appears that they did not dare to issue an official statement about his release. The critical question remains: what did Lebanon gain by freeing this prisoner? Israeli officials stated they will not release any Lebanese detainees in exchange for him.
This comes as 16 Lebanese prisoners remain detained in Israeli jails. It truly seems that releasing this one Israeli was a higher priority for the Lebanese government than securing freedom for it’s own detainees. This contrasts with Hezbollah’s past approach, where multiple Lebanese prisoners were freed during negotiations involving captured Israelis. for instance, in 1991, Tel Aviv was compelled to release 76 prisoners just to learn about the fate of two of its captives held by Hezbollah.
