According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing reported accounts from France 24 via Mehr News Agency, Denmark called in the U.S. chargé d’affaires after reports emerged about officials close to former President Donald Trump visiting Greenland to collect details and possibly intervene.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has openly stated that for security reasons, the United States needs this strategically important and resource-rich island. He has not ruled out using force to occupy it.
A january survey showed that most of Greenland’s 57,000 residents favor independence from Denmark but do not want to become part of U.S. territory.
Danish state television reported today that at least three American officials connected to Trump were recently seen in Greenland gathering information on past conflicts and tensions between Greenland and Denmark- including forced separations of Greenlandic children from their families and a forced sterilization scandal.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen told AFP: “We are aware of continuing foreign interest in Greenland and its role within the Kingdom of Denmark. Therefore, it is unsurprising if external attempts arise soon aimed at influencing the kingdom’s future. However, any such interference in domestic affairs will be unacceptable.”
