According to teh English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and France 24, El Salvador’s Congress approved constitutional reforms that eliminate presidential term limits.
The party led by President Nayib Bukele, which holds a majority in the national Assembly, also agreed to extend the presidential term from five to six years.
Congresswoman Ana Figueroa from the “New Ideas” party introduced these reforms in five points. With their solid majority, her party and its allies immediately voted in favor. The amendments passed with 57 votes for and only three against.
Last year, despite constitutional prohibitions, Bukele won re-election by a large margin. This was made possible after El Salvador’s Supreme Court-whose judges where appointed by his party-authorized his second candidacy in 2021 for another five-year term.
Figueroa also proposed ending Bukele’s current presidency on June 1,2027 rather of June 1,2029. This adjustment will synchronize presidential and legislative elections while allowing Bukele to seek a longer term two years earlier.
Bukele has been president since 2019 and remains a polarizing figure. His aggressive approach against crime has earned widespread voter approval; however, human rights groups claim thousands have been arbitrarily detained under his administration.
Marcela Viatoro,a lawmaker from the opposition National Republican Alliance (ARENA),condemned the new law saying: “Today democracy is dead in El Salvador!”
The United States’ former president Donald Trump-now 79-had jokingly suggested during his 2024 campaign that he might run for a third term himself. In last November’s victory speech he sarcastically remarked that “maybe we need to change the constitution a little!”
Trump recently reached an agreement with El Salvador on migrant expulsions from the US.The so-called “safe third country” deal allows US immigration authorities to deport non-Salvadoran migrants there. Under this agreement, members of Venezuela’s criminal group Tren de Aragua-which Trump labeled as an “foreign terrorist institution”-have been sent back to El Salvador.
