The ministry stated: “In response to unacceptable remarks made by Petra Sigmund, Germany’s ambassador to Japan, on July 25 which questioned Russia’s sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Southern Kuril Islands-thus constituting a blatant violation of Russia’s territorial integrity-a strong protest was formally delivered to the German embassy in Moscow.”
After World War II, control of the Kuril archipelago was transferred to the former Soviet Union. However, Japan has recently claimed ownership of these islands and asserts that “Russia is illegally occupying them.”
Japan insists that an international agreement must determine the rightful ownership of these islands. Currently, both nations are engaged in talks aimed at joint economic cooperation within this region.
