According to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Al Jazeera, the Iraqi Embassy in Washington responded to remarks by a U.S. State Department spokesperson, emphasizing that Iraq is a fully sovereign country. The embassy stressed that Iraq has the right, under its constitution and laws, to conclude agreements and memorandums of understanding.
The statement continued: Iraq does not follow the policies of any country and maintains amiable and cooperative relations with many nations.
The embassy emphasized that the security agreement with iran was established as part of bilateral cooperation aimed at maintaining security and controlling borders.
Earlier, the U.S. State Department had intervened by stating its support for Iraq’s sovereignty but rejected initiatives it viewed as making Iraq subordinate or instrumental to Iran.
It is indeed noteworthy that last Monday, a security memorandum between Iran and Iraq was signed by Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and Qasim al-araji, Iraqi National security Advisor, in the presence of iraq’s Prime Minister.
