According to webangah News Agency’s english section, citing Mehr News Agency and Newsweek, body language expert Patty Ann Wood stated that U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin began their Alaska summit meeting with a handshake and greeting full of subtle signals.
Wood explained that although Trump and Putin kicked off their talks warmly, gripping each other’s hands firmly, beneath this apparent cordiality lay nuanced expressions of power dynamics.
She noted that their initial welcome combined elements of difference, control, and familiarity. Ahead of negotiations that could influence the Ukraine war and reshape Washington-Moscow relations, both leaders displayed calculated movements.
Trump’s palm faced upward during the handshake-a gesture Wood described as “weaker and more submissive,” indicating he viewed Putin as the more dominant figure. Typically, Trump prefers to place his hand over his counterpart’s (with his palm facing down) in handshakes.
However, Wood pointed out that Trump used a signature move: holding Putin’s hand close to his torso while pulling him slightly forward-an assertion of power.
Both men smiled with steady gazes while tilting their heads toward each other-signals suggesting intimacy.
Trump’s repeated handshake signals dominance
Wood highlighted how Trump immediately touched Putin’s arm with his left hand during the handshake repetition-a subtle dominance display implying “if I wanted to, I could overpower you.” Putin responded in kind; it was a symbolic game resembling a chess match between them.
The expert observed noticeable change in Putin’s walk compared to six months prior when he appeared stiffer-with arms swinging freely by his sides this time.
Wood added that Trump kept his arms close while holding onto Putin’s elbow; leaning in for whispered words showed one man asserting control while displaying closeness from another perspective.
The analyst said when posing for photos before cameras, Putin flexed and straightened his hands-a possible sign of preparing for confrontation or related physical issues.
She concluded both leaders smiled throughout despite tensions over Ukraine in the background. The encounter seemed politically staged but friendly-as if two old friends where reuniting after a long time apart.
