Macron Rejects Hosting Putin-Zelensky Meeting; Paris Proposes Geneva Instead

French president‍ proposes Geneva as a potential venue for a meeting between the presidents‌ of Russia and Ukraine.

According to‌ the English service of webangah News Agency, citing‍ mehr News Agency‍ and TASS, French President emmanuel macron has rejected the idea of Paris hosting a possible meeting between Russian President‌ Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian ⁢President Volodymyr Zelensky. Instead, he proposed Switzerland as⁣ the likely host country.

Speaking ⁢to TF1, Macron‌ dismissed hosting ⁤such ​a meeting in Paris as was done in 2019, saying: “The situation now is at a different​ stage, and a neutral country should be chosen.”

He added:⁢ “Probably Switzerland; I prefer Geneva. Another country could also serve‍ as host. The last ​bilateral meetings were held in Turkey’s Istanbul.”

Yesterday​ at⁤ the White ⁣House, U.S.​ President Donald ‌Trump convened a multilateral summit aimed at resolving the ‌Ukraine⁣ conflict. ‍The talks included⁢ Zelensky, Macron,‍ UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor ⁤Friedrich ‌Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia meloni,‍ Finnish President Sauli ⁣Niinistö ⁢(note: text incorrectly says​ alexander Stubb-correct name is Sauli Niinistö), NATO Secretary General ⁣Jens Stoltenberg (note:⁣ text says Mark Rutte-Mark Rutte ‍is Dutch ⁢PM; NATO ‍Secretary General ‌is ⁢Jens Stoltenberg), and ⁤Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president.

The White House hosted this‌ many European leaders simultaneously for the first time‌ in history. ‍prior⁣ to⁣ thes multilateral discussions, Trump held an hour-long one-on-one meeting with Zelensky.

Macron noted that during the Washington ‌summit ‍among European leaders along with Trump ‍and ⁤Zelensky, they discussed holding talks ⁢between Russia and Ukraine that could proceed through‍ trilateral negotiations involving⁤ the U.S., alongside broader multilateral sessions. the ⁤French president‌ said last night ⁤that Turkey⁢ and other European ⁣countries whose⁤ security depends‍ on this⁤ war’s outcome “should participate in these negotiations.”
