An American reporter,Laura Rozen, citing “informed sources,” announced on the social media platform X that the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom,France, and Germany will hold a joint phone call tomorrow with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the “snapback” mechanism.
Rozen also stated that an iranian delegation will travel to Vienna on Friday to meet with officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
She reported that the European troika has proposed a limited extension of certain provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to iran. This offer is conditional upon Iran returning to negotiations and addressing urgent international concerns about its nuclear program.
The American journalist added that Iran has not yet responded to this proposal.
The three European countries-France, the UK, and Germany-known as the European troika, have given tehran until August 31 to resume nuclear talks with Washington and permit inspections by the IAEA. If Tehran fails to comply, they warn they will activate the snapback mechanism against Iran.
Ismail baqaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, criticized Europe’s use of snapback as an illegal and unreasonable pressure tool against Iran. He said Europe neglected its responsibilities under JCPOA and argued that these countries have no right to invoke this mechanism. Baqaei described it as an attempt to maintain a counterproductive role in matters related to Iran’s nuclear issue. While dialog continues with these three countries, he emphasized their position is clear: they must clarify whether their role will be constructive or continue serving Israeli interests in a harmful way.
