Wall Street Journal Reporter Alleges Russia’s New Plan to Extend UNSC Resolution 2231

A Wall Street Journal⁣ reporter claimed ⁣on social media that, according ⁤to ⁢sources, the European troika and⁣ the⁤ United States are likely to reject Russia’s draft proposal to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

According to the English section of webangah‍ News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency, Lawrence Norman, a Wall Street Journal ⁣correspondent, stated on ⁢X that sources indicate the three European‍ countries (the‌ United Kingdom, France,⁤ and Germany) ‌will most likely reject Russia’s draft extension of Resolution ⁢2231 related to the 2015 ⁣nuclear deal ⁢with⁣ Iran.

Yesterday on X, ⁢Norman wrote that “the Russian proposed text contains a clause specifying that with the extension‌ of⁣ the resolution,⁤ future use of the automatic reimposition mechanism (snapback) would no ‍longer be possible.Including this clause could undermine the⁣ three European countries’ trust in Moscow’s intentions.”

He quoted part of Russia’s text: “It is decided that for the extended period, any substantive review⁣ regarding compliance with⁤ Resolution 2231⁤ and JCPOA implementation shall be suspended.”

The reporter noted this ‍wording effectively suspends activation ‍and related discussions ⁤about snapback during ⁤the extension period. Though, ‌he acknowledged that his interpretation might be incorrect and‌ awaited input from other experts.

Today in another post, Norman claimed he⁤ was told⁤ it is highly probable that‍ the European troika-parties to JCPOA-and ‌the United⁤ States will reject this draft.

He added it is unlikely ‌this proposal will secure nine affirmative votes ‍needed for adoption by the UN Security Council; therefore vetoes might not⁤ even come into ⁢play.

The‍ three⁢ European countries – France, Britain, and Germany‌ – along with China and Russia remain parties‍ to Iran’s ‍2015 nuclear agreement from wich ⁣America unilaterally withdrew illegally in 2018.

Paris, London ⁢and Berlin have previously declared readiness in a letter to the United⁣ Nations to reinstate international sanctions against‌ Tehran⁤ if Iran fails to return⁣ to negotiations over its nuclear program.

According to Reuters reporting on a letter shared by ⁣France’s Foreign Ministry, ‌EU troika foreign‍ ministers have increased prospects for activating snapback against Iran through this ⁤correspondence.

The troika stated: “We have made it clear publicly that if Iran does ‍not show willingness before august 2025 for‍ a diplomatic solution or take advantage of an extension ⁣opportunity we stand ready to activate snapback.”
