The Treasury Secretary did not directly address ongoing tensions between Washington and New Delhi over the US tariff dispute but claimed that tariff negotiations with India have been lengthy despite good relations between former President trump and Prime Minister Modi. He expressed confidence that thay would ultimately reach a trade agreement with New Delhi.
Scott L. also called for Europe’s more active participation in resolving the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing that Washington should not shoulder this burden alone. Furthermore, he stated that freezing Russian assets must be considered part of negotiations with Moscow rather then those assets being immediately seized.
The claim of strong ties between Modi and Trump comes amid significant friction caused by a 25 percent increase in US tariffs on Indian goods (totaling 50 percent). A German media outlet recently reported that strained Indo-US relations over these tariffs have reached such a level that India’s Prime Minister has ignored four recent calls from the US President.
