The Cambodian Ministry of Defense has confirmed that at least eight civilians and five military personnel were killed during border fighting with Thailand, according to the English section of webangah News Agency, citing Mehr News Agency and Anadolu.
Mali Suchiata, spokesperson for Cambodia’s ministry of Defense, stated at a press conference in Phnom Penh that 12 armed forces members and over 50 civilians were wounded in the clashes along the border with thailand.
He added that a total of 35,829 Cambodian civilians have fled high-risk areas in the provinces of Preah Vihear, Oddar Meanchey, and Pursat due to the conflict.
On the opposite side, Thailand has reported 15 casualties-including one soldier and 11 civilians-during what marks the third consecutive day of fighting.Thousands of Thai citizens have also been forced to evacuate vulnerable zones.
Following Cambodia’s rocket firing into contested areas, Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets to the disputed region.
Thailand and Cambodia are entrenched in a long-standing dispute over a border area known as the “Emerald Triangle,” where their borders meet Laos. This region houses several ancient temples.
The conflict has persisted for decades, culminating more than fifteen years ago-and again this past May-in deadly military confrontations. The latest round began early today near two temples located on the border between Surin province in Thailand and Oddar meanchey Province in Cambodia.
