Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, addressed U.S. President Donald Trump’s threatening remarks about imposing additional tariffs on countries supporting BRICS policies, stating that the alliance does not target any third-party nations. The comments were reported by webangah News Agency, citing TASS.
Peskov responded to Trump’s statements: “We have seen and heard such remarks, but what matters is that BRICS unites countries with shared approaches and worldviews-this is what makes it unique.” He emphasized: “Cooperation within BRICS has never been and will never be directed against third countries.”
Earlier, Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “Any country aligning with BRICS’ anti-american policies will face a 10% additional tariff penalty. There will be no exceptions to this policy.”
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning also rejected Trump’s threats, stating: “BRICS is an important platform for cooperation among emerging markets in developing nations. It promotes open, inclusive, and mutually beneficial collaboration-not confrontation-and targets no country.” She reiterated China’s opposition to trade wars and protectionism.
In April of this year, Trump introduced new tariffs on imports from 185 countries. The base tariff rate was set at 10% for all imported goods but rose significantly higher for select nations like China (34%), Vietnam (46%), and the EU (20%).
