According to the English section of webangah News agency, citing RIA Novosti, Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on Saturday about the Azerbaijan-Armenia summit in the United States: ”The meeting between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in America deserves a positive assessment. We hope this will help advance the peace agenda.”
Zakharova added that reconciliation between Armenia and Azerbaijan must occur within a regional framework based on a balance of interests. She emphasized that trilateral agreements involving Russia remain intact, wiht no party having withdrawn from them.
She further warned that interference by non-regional actors should not create additional problems. The participation of extra-regional players should only serve to strengthen the peace process.
Meanwhile, Mohsen Pak Aein, former Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan, told Mehr News Agency that the signing of an agreement at the White House between Armenia and Baku was largely a political show orchestrated by US President Donald Trump. He stressed: “This agreement has not introduced any new developments. It was merely an opportunity for Trump to present himself as a peacemaker – despite his hands being stained with innocent blood in Syria, Lebanon, and Gaza - while being complicit in Israeli regime crimes.”
Pak Aein criticized Trump’s failure to establish peace in Ukraine and accused him of provoking aggression against Iran through Israel. He said Trump’s intention behind hosting this summit was likely to repair his international image and possibly pursue a Nobel Peace Prize.
The agreement signed at the White House is not truly a peace treaty but rather an expression of intent from both sides indicating their willingness for peace in the Caucasus region. The main terms of an actual peace deal have been under discussion for over a year and are expected to be finalized by 2026.
This signed document is not legally binding; it functions more as a public relations gesture. Moreover, Trump’s remarks about upholding each country’s territorial integrity were reiterations rather than new positions-similar provisions had already been approved and implemented under last year’s “Trilateral” accord.
