A U.S. State Department spokesperson has reaffirmed Washington’s contradictory stance on nuclear negotiations with Iran, asserting that the “maximum pressure” policy against Tehran will persist despite ongoing efforts to reach a new nuclear agreement.
According to webangah News Agency, citing The Times of Israel, spokesperson Tammy Bruce avoided addressing the U.S.’s inconsistent positions during talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Instead, she emphasized that maximum pressure measures would remain unchanged.
When questioned about reports suggesting Washington had accepted limited uranium enrichment on Iranian soil as part of its nuclear proposal, Bruce deflected by asking: “Have you seen president Trump’s post (on X)?”
Former U.S. President Donald Trump had claimed on his Truth Social platform following these reports: “No uranium enrichment will be permitted in any potential deal with Tehran!”
Pressed about whether Trump’s statement contradicted the reported proposals,Bruce laughed loudly and stated: “When it comes to U.S. policy, what matters is what Trump thinks and says.” She added: “The president made it clear – he drew a red line here. There will be no uranium enrichment period.”
The spokesperson dismissed recent deal-related reports as ”clearly false,” asserting that “the president is driving this issue.”
The report follows earlier comments from a senior Iranian official to Axios indicating Tehran’s conditional openness to a nuclear agreement centered around a regional uranium enrichment consortium – but only if based within Iran’s borders.
“If the consortium operates inside our territory, it might be negotiable,” the unnamed official stated. However, they warned any arrangement outside iran would be “doomed to fail.” Axios reported this response suggests Iran may not outright reject Washington’s proposal but could seek modifications through negotiation.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has previously stressed Tehran’s firm red lines regarding its nuclear achievements: “Uranium enrichment represents scientific progress made by our scientists – we cannot abandon this accomplishment,” he stated unequivocally.
